Overview:

District 14 - Eunos, Geylang, Kembangan, Paya Lebar

Located towards the Eastern part of the island, Paya Lebar used to be a mere patch of swamp neighbouring the Kallang River. Once a lowly area with squatters during Singapore’s earlier days, the area is now seeing rapid transformation and is becoming a hotbed for residents and investors alike. The name Paya Lebar has Malay roots with the words ‘swamp’ and ‘wide’ co-relating to ‘Paya’ and ‘lebar’ respectively.

Before the now world-famous Changi Airport took centre stage for Singapore’s tourism and aviation pursuits, there was the Paya Lebar Airport, which was a pivotal service area for over 20 years, up till Changi Airport came in 1981.

Paya Lebar is an area on the cusp of huge change, as evident by the new Singpost centre which is already up and running and the mega construction taking place for the upcoming Paya Lebar Quarters (PLQ), a significant pivotal project in developer Lendlease’s portfolio in Singapore.

Where heritage delights and modernity co-exist side by side

Residents in this Potong Pasir area can find many traditional culinary delights and neighbourhood flavours with an old-It is never hard to find a local Singaporean culinary delight to fill your cravings in this district. Quaint shopping centres that reflect an older era (though some have been earmarked for En Bloc Redevelopment) are still around for that nostalgic sense of retail experiences. Additionally, the annual Geyland Serai bazaar is a mega calendar event with a dizzying variety of home-made delicacies, independent food vendors and traditional shopping options.

Paya Lebar’s close neighbour is the infamous Geyland which houses the city state’s legal red-light district, which is regulated by Singapore’s authorities and they operate legally under the radar in their own little universe. This point hasn’t seemed to dampen private property development and activity in the area – owning to much of the land’s freehold nature, at what seems to be a bargain compared to other districts. It’s hyper convenient proximity to the city and rich food choices (some of which operate late into the night) are one of the reasons locals and expats alike, don’t mind residing in the area.
